Yes you are thinking right! Lets start the day with amazing hot chocolate and waffles. This is the perfect place to kick start your bruges trip. This cafe is situated right in the middle of the city centre. As you get inside you will get lost in world of chocolate due to the chocolaty aroma. If you do visit them, do try their hot chocolate milk. They serve the hot milk with the choco-cups of mix assorted chocolate ( which you can choose according to your taste buds) . You just have to dip the whole cup of chocolate in hot milk and whisk it till it goes dark brown. The whole experience was so overwhelming and ofcourse the hot chocolate milk was mind blowing (The best). They also serve delicious waffles to treat your taste bud.
Ultimate Guide for a day trip to Brugge in Belgium
What to Expect ?
There are few places in this world which cannot be described in words, but you have to feel it right there. Belgian city of Bruges, known worldwide for its fairytale appeal and endless flow of romance, requires no introduction. The flawless natural beauty resides in this city of bruges. The city can be visited any time of the year and still mesmerises you with its beauty and history.
If you have one or two days to discover Bruges and you want to fall in love with the city, I promise this is the itinerary you need to follow. This action-packed itinerary for Bruges will leave you hopelessly in love with the city, with a belly full of waffles and a camera full of beautiful, postcard-perfect memories.
1) The old chocolate house:
I will recommend you to have chocolate milk and waffles as a first meal in morning. Visit the place for your breakfast to avoid the crowd. ( trust me it fills your stomach too much)
2) Basilica of the Holy Blood:
The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a 12th century chapel, in the medieval town of Bruges, Belgium, which houses a revered vial containing cloth stained with the actual blood of Christ.
While the chapel itself is a beautiful site, it is the cloth and its accompanying story that attracts visitors from the devoutly religious to the deeply skeptical to those just curious to know behind the story.
On Ascension Day, which is a celebrated religious festival in Bruges, the cloth is taken out in a procession on the streets. The first recorded procession took place in 1291, and some 718 years later, it is still happening.
Imp Note: you can only visit or worship the holy blood between 11:30 am to 12:00 pm in afternoon.
3) The city centre ( Markt):
The Markt is the main plaza is surrounded by brightly coloured historical buildings called as market square in the centre of the city with restaurants, shops, hotels, hostels and parks. The Markt is also named a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000. There are many museums and shops in the Markt that you could spend hours exploring the marketplace. One important stop to make here is Choco-story– a chocolatier and chocolate museum that displays the history of Belgian chocolate. You will definitely be Amazed by seeing the different artistic chocolate structures.
Pro Trip: Come back in the evening, when the city lights are turned on. The area turns prettier!
4) Canal Tour:
This was my absolute favourite activity in bruges. I know it is very touristy thing but trust me if you wanna see the best of bruges medieval architecture you must to canal tour. This is a wonderful way to see hidden corners of the city that cannot be accessed by foot – secret gardens, tiny bridges, and Gothic-style architecture. The boat tour varies from 30 mins to 2 hrs right from the centre of the city. The boat captains cum guide very well explains the important buildings and historic architecture during the tour in mostly two language. ( english and Flemish) The cost of the ride is cost around 10 Euro per person.
Pro Tip: Take a canal tour first thing in the morning to avoid the long queue and the rush in canal.
5) Kruisvest windmills:
Although you can find plenty of windmills in Netherlands, but this bruges windmill has his own history to cherish. Bruges has 4 remaining historic 18th and 19th century medieval windmills at top of their own little hills. You can stroll around and relax at the place. It is also quite quiet and ideal place if you want to skip the crowds in Markt.
Pro Tip: The walk to the windmills from the city centre is stunning with medieval building around you.
6)Belfry tower :
The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower in the city centre of Bruges. One of the city’s most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives and served as an observation tower to spot fires and potential danger outside of the city. To have a spectacular view of the city as well as to admire Belgium medieval architecture this is must visit. The only cons is that you have to make some efforts for the view as the tower has not elevators and you can reach the top only climbing 366 steps ) trust me its worth climbing, if you can 🙂
Exploring the history of the tower was one of my favourite things to do in Belgium.
Pro Tip: Make sure you buy tickets online or pre-book it otherwise you will end up standing in a long queue for almost an 1 hour, specially on weekends.
7) Frits, Beer and mussels:
One of the biggest reason we travel is to try the local cuisines. If you are in Belgium, then trying our beers is a must. Belgium beers are so delicious that you don’t wanna miss it by any chance. The thick and creamy tastes are sure to leave you wanting more. You can find a very large selection of brands and flavours and many bars. I recommend checking out The Beer Wall in 2be bruges. This is an amazing cafe with great beer and a spectacular view.
If you wanna Try something new, go for coconut beer in this cafe. The second most (or first for some) must try item is definitely the Frits (Fries). Belgian fries are thick cut and double deep-fried for that extra crispness. They are served in a cone and topped with mayonnaise or other sauces.
Note: The fav local cuisine and we highly recommend, is to try out the fresh mussels. Served in all the restaurants in the city, it is only of yummiest food that we tried in Bruges.
I definitely recommend to try out ginger garlic mussels.
Belgium has lots of gorgeous cities : check out some other cities of Belgium and Plan your holiday Accordingly.
