Giethoorn is a beautiful town in the north-east of Amsterdam. The town has more canals than roads and no wonder why it is also known as Venice of Holland (The Netherlands). The floating ducks and grazing horses in the adjacent fields gives you the perfect picturesque moment in the magical canal village of Holland- Giethoorn.
Best Short Day Trip from Amsterdam to Giethoorn
The village comprises of smaller farms which are connected by 170 small wooden bridges. The charming houses can only be reached with the boats through the canals (or by a bicycle as the Dutch do 😜 Yes, you heard it right! It’s a no-driving zone.
How to reach ?
If you are a tourist in the Netherlands, you can take an intercity or sprinter train from Amsterdam towards Steenwijk with a train change at Amersfoort.
From Steenwijk train station take bus no ’70’ and get down at ‘Hotel Giethoorn’. It’s right across the canal area.
It takes approx. 2.5 hrs from Amsterdam to Steenwijk by train.
You can use RET App or website which gives you all the info with relevant connection between trains, bus and trams.
Getting around....
As you reach the village, start your trip with a canal ride first. Due to a large crowd during the weekend, it’s recommended having an advance booking online for the canal boats or cruises.
For couples or a group, you can hire your own motorboat from minimum one hour up to a day. These electric boats are easy to use and can be rented on the spot or by online booking as a per hour rate starting from 17 euro per hour.
If you are not comfortable to use the boat, you can also experience the canal by option for a canal cruise. The ticket varies cost around 8 euro pp. But I highly recommend enjoying the unique experience of navigating your own little motorboat.

After that romantic canal ride, you can stroll in and around the canal area.
If you like to know more about Giethoorn history, you can also visit ‘Museum Giethoorn’ . As the name says, it is a museum (sorry for the lame joke 😛 ) which showcases history of the canal town. It also has a old giant water turbine within it.
Just around the corner of the museum, you will find pretty ladies selling yummiest traditional Dutch vanilla- flavoured waffles. Do not miss it!!!!
Hungry !
Alternatively, you can also sit and relax in one of the number of cafes along the canals. A beer along the canal is a perfect recipe for a warm summer!!!!! Feeling Hungry???? There are also restaurants where you can fill up yourself after the tiring day.
When to visit !
Best months to visit is from early April to September. If you are lucky, you will also get to witness a romantic canal wedding 💕
Just a cautious note: Beware of the notorious Dutch rains and plan accordingly to !!! 🙂
We recommend you to visit Giethoorn if you are in Amsterdam and have an additional day to spare. It is worth the visit where you can discover Holland on the boat!!!!
Also must explore the neighbouring country Brussel, and its beautiful cities like Ghent, Bruges and Dinant.
